In the book, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, it is said that “what is essential is invisible to the eye”. Air is tangible but often an invisible matter that is important to everyone – even inanimate materials.
The Smog Effect: State of Thailand’s Air
Earlier this year, Thailand encountered a different kind of environmental enemy – smog. Locals and travellers alike were shocked when thick, deadly cloud of air pollutants surrounded Bangkok. As reported in one of the news, among the many toxic materials found in the air are coal-fired power plants spewing, vehicle emissions, and burnt rubbish. The air quality was so bad that at one point, Thai officials had to cancel school for safety reasons. Even Sonthi Kotchawat, expert on environmental-health gave a stern warning about the microscopic particles in the air can enter the lungs and then into the bloodstream.
TRIVIA: While air is usually used to associate with oxygen, air and oxygen are two different matters. Air actually is made up of different gases (like carbon dioxide) plus oxygen. To be specific, the atmosphere is made up of the following elements: 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and .93% of argon.
The Fresher, Cleaner Side: Koh Samui
The good thing is that there is a place where air is always clean and pleasant. A true refuge against the environmental hazards and stressors. Samujana, a luxurious villa estate, is located in beautiful island of Koh Samui. The island itself is surrounded by lush forests, and blooming flora and fauna. With this, the tourists are expected to bask in a more invigorating environment.
Now, with the news of how severe smog is in Thailand, Koh Samui surprisingly ranks well with its refreshing, clean air. Air quality index or AQI, is the measurement used to analyse the concentration of pollution present. Since air is composed of different chemical or particles, there are different industry devices used to collect air samples. Afterwards, pollutants are detected and measured accordingly.
Below is the chart of how clean Koh Samui is based on the level of contaminants compared to other cities:
