COVID-19 Safe Countries: Thailand Ranked 2nd in the Global COVID-19 Recovery

Thailand is one of the safest countries right now as COVID-19 spreads. It’s also the second best country out of 184 countries in the world. This is due to its ongoing COVID-19 recovery effort.

It’s also based on a study by the World Health Organization (WHO). Thailand has won the fight against the first wave of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. This country had fewer community spread infections and fatalities than expected.

People made several theories about how Thailand fought COVID-19. Some theories are ethnic differences, warmer weather and not shaking hands and hugging. One thing is sure. Thailand has recorded fewer than 3,240 cases and 58 deaths despite an influx of foreign visitors in 2020.

These tourists are from countries hit by the coronavirus. As of July 9, there had been no cases of local transmission in Thailand for about seven weeks.

In Malaysia, the Ministry of Science and Innovation developed the Global COVID-19 Index. In collaboration with PEMADU Associates, they used a large data analysis system. It’s a system that scored an index and ranked 184 participating countries. The score depends on how well each country had coped with the effects of the COVID-19.

The index places a 70% score which came from two parts. The first parameter’s goal is to confirm the number of positive cases. This number must be on a per capita basis in relation to the country size. The second criteria is the per capita death rate of each country. This number must be in comparison to its population size.

The remaining 30% consists of a fixed score derived from the World Health Security Index (GHS). This came from Johns Hopkins University. They are the experts in global public health, infectious disease and emergency preparedness.

These have been at the forefront of the international response to COVID-19. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funds the GHS. The goal is to assess each country’s readiness to cope and deal with the COVID-19 outbreak.

Thailand has a robust health security system. The Thai government believes that it’s responsible for the kingdom’s success. There is a good coordination and cooperation between government departments. These include provincial and local bodies across the country.

The Thai government makes clear public communications about how to avoid COVID-19 transmission. More than 1,000 epidemiological teams across Thailand investigated every single case. They also traced every contact and looked after them for 14 days.

Thai people also maintain social distancing when using public transportation.  Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for Thailand’s Ministry of Health, said, “It has to do with culture. Thai people don’t have body contact when we greet each other.”

Thailand’s worldwide ranking is surprising. As of January 18, 2020, there were eight direct flights a day from Wuhan, China which is the epicenter of the outbreak. These flights are going to Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi, as well as flights every other day to Chiang Mai.
